Renegade National's opening hole is a par 5 dogleg right and should be quite a mental challenge. The landing area is wide enough and has two large bunkers on the left side to turn the hole to the right for the second shot. It is possible to reach the green in two and this shot will require a decision. A small lake guards the front of the green but a well struck long iron or fairway metal may result in an eagle. A lay up shot should be a sure par and a very possible birdie.

On this unique par three hole, the green is protected by a lake in front and a small bunker on the left side. The elevated green has a sever slope to the front. Be careful not to be short or you will be teeing up another ball. Club selection is more important than direction on this hole and the green will yield few one putts.

A spectacular view unfolds as the player moves to the third tee. Looking beyond the fourth fairway, west towards Crossville, one can see for miles and miles across the Plateau. It is possible to hit a driver on this short dogleg left hole. A three metal or long iron may be a higher percentage shot avoiding the large fairway bunker on the right. A short iron second shot must avoid two bunkers of the left and you will be in good shape for a low score. This hole is a must to birdie in preparation for the three demanding holes that follow.

At this point the strategies begin to stiffen. The fairway on this fairly long par four is narrow for the first 250 yards. The drive must be precise to avoid bunker on the left and all the trees that line both sides of the fairway. The second shot plays slightly down hill. The approach is straight into a fairly deep putting area.

With the Great Smoky Mountains in full view from the tee, the view here is superb. From teeing ground to landing area the elevation changes dramatically. The result is a "Bust It!" feeling. The best drive is right center of the fairway; by all means avoid the large grass swells that guard the left side of the fairway. Rarely will this green be reached in two and it is wiser to place the second shot short and left of the large swell short and right of the green. The rock face that also guard the green could run your score up for sure. The green slopes severly from the back left to right front. A good putting touch is a must.

Here is a spectacular par 3. A long iron or metal wood must carry a very deep gorge to a slightly elevated green which is two tiered. Shots that do not find the putting surface will require some expert chipping to save par.

At #7 the player is faced with the narrowest fairway on the golf course. Out of bounds left and only a series of mounds on the right protect the errant tee shot from leaving the mountain. The smart play here is with a fairway metal or long iron. Keep the ball in play and approach the green with a short iron. This short par 4 should yield a lot of birdies. The green is small and relatively flat. The view west of the green is spectacular.

The cart trail winds down to the eighth tee as the golfer now enters the "Ravine" holes. This hole has several natural hazards of rock, water, waterfalls and gorges are accentuated. This tee shot over water is hit to the right center. The very small green is open from the right and an accurate short iron shot should set up a potential birdie. Rock cliffs on the left and deep natural caves on the right makes this a very dramatic hole.

This tee shot is played across a ravine and a fast running creek. The green is amphitheatered into the hillside of a great rock outcroping. The long slender green is open directly to the front. Proper club selection is a must. If you are short you will need to tee up another ball. If you are long you might have to tee up another ball as well. The green is an infinity green looking only to the Great Smoky Mountains over 90 miles away.

A successful round on the front nine provides the golfer a feeling of exhilaration, a rare appreciation for the mountainous majesty of the Renegade National Golf Club. It is a diverse and exciting nine holes and a good introduction to the backside.

The tee shot is played from a hillside overlooking one of the two ponds on this par 5. This fairway offers a large landing area; left center is best, as the ball will tend to roll right. The green is laying to the left of the second pond. Hitting the green from the blue tee will be a heroic effort. However, if the player gambles and succeeds, it is almost assured he will score a birdie and have a chance at an eagle. The green slopes to the front and the second pond is hidden behind the green to the right.

Number 11 is slightly uphill with a fairway that slopes to the right. A creek crosses the open fairway. It is not strategic and a small section of the fairway fronts the green. The player must carry the ball to the putting surface instead of bouncing it on. The green is double tiered and of medium size. (As you leave this hole, look over your shoulder; what a view!)

A long trip back to the top of the mountain will give you time to think about what is left for your round. The tee shot on this hole requires a straight shot. If you go left you will be in the woods and a definite lost ball. A shot to the right will put your drive in a small lake. A drive down the middle is what you need, however, if you get one the trouble is not over yet. This green will be the hardest to putt of any hole on the course. A three putt will happen more times than two putting of this green.

This is the shortest hole of the par threes. The hole is down hill and is beautifully shaped. The green is protected by a lake in front and the rightside and two bunkers on the back. You can score good if you hit the green. If not, who knows.

Aim for the German style house on the right. Keep the ball in play here and you should have a short iron into the green. The green is protected on the left by a deep grass swell. You do not want to be in it. This short hole can be birdied with good putting.

With the Great Smoky Mountains in full view from the tee, the view here is superb. This picturesque par five is also the longest on the golf course. It will reach over 700 yards from the tips. It is a magnificent hole. The second shot is to a narrow strip of fairway or over a large Lake that beckons at the right. This green will rarely - if ever - be reached in two. The green opens from the left and the approach shots are exciting.

This hole will be remembered for its challenge and its sheer beauty. The tee is set out into the boarding lake, enclosed by a retaining wall of native Tennessee Stone. The tee shot must cross a small portion of the lake to a relatively large landing area. Only the long hitter can reach the fairway bunker to the right which gives the hole its character and definition. The second shot is uphill to a large, undulating green. A par on this hole will be noteworthy. Looking back towards the tee, the golfer will definitely appreciate the majesty of this golf course.

A short ride up the winding path is the next tee. The last two holes are located right on top of the mountain, overlooking the whole Cumberland Plateau. These holes require accuracy and skill rather than brawn. The tee shot must be hit to the right center of the fairway. The small green is raised above the fairway and is guarded by a large bunker on the front left. A well-placed shot will set up a potential birdie.

The final hole is a slight dogleg left par 4 similar to hole number 17. Both fairways slant to the left. Again, the tee shot must be hit to the right center. For your second shot you can line it up using the large water tower. A large bunker on the right front of the green protects any shot that is short. Propert club selection and a good perception of distance are required.

After completing play on Renegade National Golf Club, a golfer should have had a good test of all phases of the game and will have experienced superb views of the scenic beauty of Tennessee's splendid Cumberland Plateau. Serious and casual golfers alike should be drawn again and again to the challenge of Renegade National Golf Club - a mountain top masterpiece.
